250 grams Sugar (Shakkar)
1/2 tsp Green Cardamom (Choti Elaichi) Powder
4 tbsp Cooking Oil (tel)
A pinch Saffron (Kesar) Food Colour
As required Water (Paani)

Banana Puran Poli is a delicious, sweet stuffed flat bread prepared with Nendran Bananas (Kerala Bananas).

Banana Puran Poli is a lovely twist to the classic puran poli prepared with chana dal.

I learnt to prepare banana puran poli from my mother. Initially, I was a little hesistant as I had never prepared puran poli in my life as it requires a certain amount of technique. Finally, I thought it best to overcome my fears and learn this awesome dish. It might look a little difficult at first but trust me it’s not.

So dearies, let us see how to prepare these unique and delicious Banana Puran Polis.

Firstly, you will require extremely ripe nendran bananas (Kerala bananas).

Cook these nendran bananas (Kerala bananas) in a steamer.

Once the bananas (kela) are cooked, remove them and once they cool down, remove their skin.

Put these in a blender and make a paste.

Take refined flour (maida), cooking oil (tel), saffron (kesar) food colour and salt (namak) in a mixing bowl.

Add water (paani) and prepare a dough. Make sure the dough should neither be too soft nor too stiff. Let the dough rest for 1 or 2 hours.

Heat a kadhai (wok), add the banana (kela) paste.

Then, add sugar (shakkar) to it and keep stirring on a low to medium flame.

Once it is almost ready, add green cardamom (choti elaichi) powder.

Keep stirring till the colour of the paste changes and the paste becomes into a ball. Do not over cook it as you will not be able to make balls of the paste after it cools down.

Remove it from the gas stove and let it cool and then make balls of the mixture.

Make balls from the dough.

Roll the ball with a rolling pin (belan) and place the banana (kela) mixture ball in the centre.

Wrap the banana ball from all sides.

Roll it with a rolling pin (belan).

Heat a tawa (griddle) and place the banana (kela) puran poli on it.

Once the bottom side is cooked, flip it.

Then, once the other side is also cooked and there are brown spots, flip the puran poli and remove it on paper.

Apply ghee (clarified butter) over piping hot banana puran poli and relish it with all your loved ones.

After the Banana Puran Polis cool down, whenever you want to eat, warm it, apply ghee (clarified butter) then eat it. It tastes best when warm and topped with ghee (clarified butter).

Step 1

Take 1 kg of extremely ripe Nendran Bananas (Kerala Bananas), cook them in a steamer, peel them after they cool down and blend to a fine paste .

Take 1/2 kg refined flour (maida), add 4 tbsp cooking oil (tel), a pinch of saffron (kesar) food colour and salt (namak) as per taste. Add water (paani) and prepare a dough. The dough should neither be too soft nor too stiff. Let the dough rest for 1 to 2 hours.

In a kadhai (wok), add the banana (kela) paste and 250 grams sugar (shakkar) and stir it continously on a medium to low flame. Once it is almost ready, add 1/2 tsp green cardamom (choti elaichi) powder and stir till done. Once the mixture cools down, make balls from it. The banana (kela) mixture should change colour and should be of the consistency of a soft ball. Do not overcook, as it will be difficult to make balls of the mixture once it cools down.

Make balls from the dough. Take a ball and roll it into a small disc with a rolling pin (belan). Place the banana (kela) mixture ball and cover it from all sides. Then, roll the stuffed ball again with a rolling pin.

Heat a tawa (griddle), place the rolled puran poli on the tawa. Once the bottom side is cooked, flip the puran poli and once the other side is cooked as well with brown spots, place it on a paper. Apply ghee (clarified butter) and relish it. If it cools down, warm it again and apply ghee (clarified butter) and eat.
