Homemade Sambar Powder Recipe – Khanapoor

A traditional Sambar Powder recipe.

  • Easy

Homemade Sambar Powder is an aromatic blend of many spices which takes the taste of sambar to a whole new level.

Homemade sambar powder is very easy to prepare and that too within a few minutes.

Sambar is one of the ultimate comfort foods. But most of them prepare it with store bought powders which lack taste. Freshly prepared sambar powder gives a divine taste to the overall dish.

This is a traditional recipe given by my maternal grandmother. I love adding this powder to vegetable sambar and navy beans sambar. This makes the sambar absolutely lip smacking. This is a vegan and gluten free recipe.

Let us see how to prepare this aromatic powder.

Take all the ingredients like coriander (dhania) seeds, cumin (jeera) seeds, black peppercorns (kali mirch), fenugreek (methi) seeds, toor dal, curry leaves (kadi patta), hing powder (asafoetida) and dry red chillies (sukhi lal mirch).

Once it is roasted, turn off the gas and add the curry leaves (kadi patta) and mix properly. Keep it aside.

Step 2

In the same pan, add 12 dry red chillies (sukhi lal mirch), add 1/4 tsp cooking oil (tel) and roast the dry red chillies (sukhi lal mirch). Once they are nicely roasted, they will puff. That is the time to turn off the gas and keep the dry red chillies (sukhi lal mirch) aside.
