1/4 cup Masoor dal
3 tbsp Chopped garlic (Lehsun)
2 tbsp Chopped Ginger (Adrak)
4 Chopped Green chillies (Hari Mirch)
1/4 tsp Turmeric (Haldi) powder
1 tsp Garam Masala
1 tsp Cumin (Jeera) Powder
1 tsp Coriander (Dhania) powder
2 sprigs Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)
1 tsp Cumin (Jeera) seeds
1 tsp Mustard seeds (Rye)
3 tbsp Chopped Coriander (Dhania) leaves
2 tbsp Ghee (Clarified butter)
As per taste Salt (Namak)
2 cups Water (Paani)

Moong Dal Tadka Recipe – Khanapoor

A Dal Tadka made with skinless yellow moong dal and masoor dal

Moong Dal Tadka is an excellent example of a healthy comfort food.

Moong Dal Tadka is a dish for all reasons and seasons. The first time I had this dish was in Vienna at my dear friend Daniela’s place. Even though she’s an Austrian she cooks excellent Indian food. I completely fell in love with this dish. I have slightly tweaked the recipe but the taste is as good as Daniela’s Moong Dal Tadka.

This dish is prepared with two dals, Skinless Moong Dal and Masoor Dal. Moong Dal is very good for health. It is low in calories and carbohydrates and very rich in plant based protein and dietary fibre. It is very good for people who want to lose weight and suffer from diabetes, hypertension, high LDL levels.

Masoor Dal also called red lentils is very good for health. It is extremely good for one’s skin, teeth, bones, eyes, weight loss, maintaining sugar levels and regulating blood pressure.

Now, let us see how to prepare this moong dal tadka.

First, take skinless moong dal and masoor dal.

Binachilkewali Moong Dal - Moong Dal Tadka

Masoor Dal - Moong Dal Tadka

Now, keep chopped garlic (lehsun), ginger (adrak), green chillies (hari mirch) and fresh coriander (dhania) leaves ready. Take a few sprigs of curry leaves (kadi patta).


Kadi Patta - Moong Dal Tadka

In a vessel, take skinless moong dal, masoor dal, chopped ginger (adrak) and half of the garlic (lehsun) and turmeric (haldi) powder. Pressure cook it for 10 minutes after the first whistle on a medium flame.

Pressure cooker mein dono dal, lehsun aur adrak pakaiye.

Put the cooked dals, in a kadhai, add salt (namak) as per taste and water (paani) to get the desired consistency.

Add cumin (jeera) Powder.

Jeera Powder Daliye - Moong dal Tadka

In a small kadhai, heat ghee.

Ghee Ko garam kijiye

Once the ghee is hot, add cumin (jeera) seeds.

Now, add mustard (rye) seeds.

Rye - Moong Dal Tadka

After the mustard (rye) seeds splutter, add chopped garlic (lehsun).

Lehsun - Moong Dal Tadka

Once it is cooked but not brown, add the chopped green chillies (hari mirch).

Hari Mirch - Moong Dal Tadka

Add coriander (dhania) powder.

Dhania Powder - Moong Dal Tadka

Now, add garam masala.

Garam Masala - Moong Dal Tadka

Give it a good mix and add curry leaves (kadi patta).

Pour the tadka over the dal.

Dal par tadka daliye

Garnish with chopped coriander (dhania) leaves.

Your Moong Dal Tadka is ready.

Enjoy it with rice or any rice preparation. You can also eat it with any type of flat bread.

Step 1

Take 3 parts of skinless moong dal (bina chilkewali moong dal) and 1 part of masoor dal along with 1/4 tsp turmeric (haldi) powder and 2 tbsp chopped ginger (adrak) and 1 1/2 tbsp chopped garlic (lehsun) and cook in a pressure cooker for 10 minutes on a medium flame after the first whistle.


Step 2

After it is cooked, pour the dal in a kadhai, add salt (namak) as per taste and 1 tsp cumin (jeera) powder. Add water to get the desired consistency and bring the dal to a boil.


Step 3

For the tadka, heat 2 tbsp ghee, add 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp mustard seeds. After the mustard seeds splutter, add 1 1/2 tbsp chopped garlic, 4 chopped green chillies, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp garam masala and 2 sprigs curry leaves. Pour this tadka over the dal.


Step 4

Finally garnish with 3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves. Enjoy this Moong Dal Tadka with rice, rice preparations or any type of flat breads.
