1 measure Urad Dal
1 big ball Whole wheat flour dough (Gehun ka atta)
3 tbsp Coconut (Nariyal) grated
5 Green chillies (Hari mirch) chopped
1 tsp Mustard seeds (Rye)
2 sprigs Curry Leaves (Kadi patta)
1 tbsp (for tempering) + 2 tbsp Cooking Oil (Tel)
As per taste Salt (Namak)
Water (Paani)

Urad Dal Paratha Recipe

Urad Dal Paratha is something most of you would not have tasted.

Urad Dal Paratha is inspired from a dish called Biscuit Roti. Since I always look for ways to make an unhealthy dish, healthy, I have made it like a paratha. It is very filling and you will not feeling like eating much for the rest of the day.

There are different versions of biscuit roti, my mom used to prepare this version when I was a kid. She had learnt it from a distant relative who owned a hotel. They used to prepared it like this.

But once the health bug bites you, you find new ways to make it. So, my mom tried it as a paratha and it tasted great. So, we gave this name to the paratha.

Urad Dal is grown in southern parts of Asia. Urad dal is a great option for high protein diet. It is a good source of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Urad Dal is also very rich in dietary fibre, iron, folic acid, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

This dal also helps in reducing LDL, which is a bad cholestrol and helps in inproving overall cardiovascular health.

For this paratha, you have to soak urad dal for at least two hours. Drain the water completely. Add chopped green chillies, freshly grated coconut, and tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Mix well. Take a ball of whole wheat flour dough. Roll it and then place a tbsp of filling in the centre and close it from all sides. Roll it into a round paratha. Heat a tawa, place the paratha on it. Flip it after 30 seconds, apply cooking oil and flip it again. Apply cooking oil and flip once and remove from the tava.

It is a simple paratha with simple flavours.

Step 1

Soak Urad dal for atleast 2 hours. Drain the water (paani) completely. Add grated coconut (nariyal), chopped green chillies (hari mirch) and salt (namak).


Step 2

Heat cooking oil (tel), add the mustard seeds (rye) and after they splutter, add the curry leaves (kadi patta) and pour over the urad dal.


Step 3

Take some whole wheat flour (gehun ka atta) dough. Make a ball, and roll it. Now add 1 ½ tbsp of the urad dal mixture, close the sides and roll again.


Step 4

Heat a tawa/griddle. Put the paratha on the tawa, after 15 seconds, flip the paratha. Apply cooking oil (tel) and flip the paratha and apply cooking oil (tel) once again.


Step 5

Once you see brown spots on both sides of the paratha, remove it and relish it as it is or with any accompaniment of your choice.


Step 6

You can also deep fry it, but make sure to prick the paratha at various places so that it does not puff while you deep fry.
